He graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and obtained his Ph.D. from the Medical School of the University of Athens. He served as a National expert of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture on Laboratory Animal Welfare issues in the Council of Europe and the European Union.
Since 2002, he is working in the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA), Greece as a Senior Research Scientist and Head of the laboratory animal facilities.
His scientific interests are focusing on the proper care and use of laboratory animals, the ethical evaluation of research protocols as well as the education and training of scientists working in the field of Laboratory Animal Science and Medicine.
He was Vice President elected for International Liaisons in the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations – FELASA (2008-2014), Governing Board member elected of the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science – ICLAS (2005-2015) and member of the Executive Committee of the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care - AAALAC Int (2009-2012). He is ad hoc expert of AAALAC Int (since 1996).
He is an acting member of the BRFAA’s Project Evaluation Committee and Chairman of the National Committee for the Welfare of Animals used for scientific purposes, since 2018 (in 2020 was re-elected in the same position for the years 2020-2022). He is a contract expert of the European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA) for the peer review ethics evaluation of research projects.
He is teaching “Laboratory Animal Ethics” in the Bioethics Master Program of the Medical School of the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, and he is participating as an invited speaker on Bioethics in four MSc Courses organized by the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Dr. Kostomitsopoulos has been a co-author in over 100 peer-reviewed articles in International and Greek scientific journals.
